Campervan Travel Tips for Iceland

Plan Your Route

Use travel apps or offline GPS tools to chart your journey in advance. These tools are particularly useful for locating campsites, gas stations, grocery stores, and service areas. While spontaneity is one of the joys of campervan travel, knowing where you’ll refuel or rest each night can prevent unwanted surprises. Some areas of Iceland, especially the highlands, have limited service stations and facilities, so mapping your stops is key to a stress-free journey.

Check the Weather Forecast

Iceland's weather can shift dramatically within minutes. It's not uncommon to experience sunshine, wind, and snowfall all in one day. Checking the daily weather forecast helps you decide which roads are safe to take and whether it's wise to delay or adjust your travel plans. The Icelandic website vedur.is provides up-to-date weather alerts and warnings, which are essential for a safe drive, especially in the winter months.

Respect Local Rules

Wild camping in Iceland is no longer permitted unless you have express landowner permission. Stick to designated campsites to ensure you're complying with Icelandic law and protecting the natural environment. Campsites also offer convenient amenities such as toilets, showers, and waste disposal stations. By following local rules, you contribute to preserving Iceland’s breathtaking landscapes for future visitors.

Drive Safely

Driving in Iceland comes with unique challenges. Gravel roads can be slippery, especially after rain, and river crossings require caution and proper knowledge. Reduce your speed on unpaved surfaces and avoid abrupt braking. Always drive with your headlights on, and watch for animals, especially sheep, that may wander onto the roads. If your route includes mountain roads or F roads, make sure your camper is a 4x4 and is suited for such terrain, and never attempt to cross rivers unless you’re confident and well-equipped.

Take Regular Breaks

Long driving hours can lead to fatigue, especially when navigating unfamiliar roads. Plan breaks every couple of hours to stretch, rest, and enjoy the scenery. Iceland offers many scenic picnic areas and pull-over spots, so you’ll never run short of places to take a breather.

Use Campsites to Recharge

Staying at official campsites provides access to electricity, water refills, and proper waste disposal. Many campsites also have common rooms and kitchen areas where you can connect with fellow travelers. Recharging yourself and your vehicle’s amenities helps maintain comfort and safety throughout your trip.

Keep an Emergency Kit Handy

Always have an emergency kit in your camper, including a flashlight, first-aid supplies, extra food, drinking water, and a power bank for your devices. A well-stocked kit ensures you’re prepared for unexpected events like road closures or changes in weather.

Protect the Environment

Practice responsible tourism by disposing of trash properly, avoiding off-road driving, and using eco-friendly products whenever possible. Iceland’s fragile ecosystems depend on all of us to stay pristine.

Be Ready for Limited Connectivity

In more remote areas, mobile signal and internet access may be limited. Download offline maps and guides ahead of time, and inform someone of your travel plans if you’ll be off the grid for extended periods.

Following these campervan travel tips ensures your journey is not just safe, but also rich in experiences and memories. Whether you're navigating the south coast, enjoying hot springs under the stars, or seeking the northern lights, Iceland Campers is here to support your unforgettable adventure.

See Iceland's Breathtaking Landscapes

Whether you're venturing through the south coast, the golden circle, or the national parks of the north, a camper van gives you the flexibility to stop and admire Iceland's breathtaking landscapes whenever you please. Don’t forget to chase the northern lights or relax in geothermal hot springs.

Traveling by camper allows you to fully immerse yourself in Iceland’s extraordinary scenery. From your own mobile base, you can experience the beauty of ever-changing terrain—volcanic deserts, glacier lagoons, moss-covered lava fields, and dramatic cliffs.

Wake up next to a waterfall, cook breakfast with a glacier in view, or pull over at sunset to marvel at endless fjords. The landscapes of Iceland are not just something you pass through—they are something you live within.

Along the iconic Ring Road, each kilometer brings a new natural wonder. The south coast offers towering waterfalls like Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss, black sand beaches at Reynisfjara, and icy marvels like Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Heading north reveals geothermal areas such as Mývatn, rich with volcanic activity and bubbling mud pools.

The Snæfellsnes Peninsula in the west, often called "Iceland in Miniature," offers a compact version of the country’s diverse geography.

With a campervan, you're free from hotel check-in times or rigid tour schedules. If you discover a hidden canyon or a lesser-known trail, you can linger as long as you like. If the weather shifts, you can adjust your route without hassle. And during the summer months, the midnight sun allows for nearly round-the-clock exploration.

Don’t miss the chance to visit Vatnajökull National Park, home to Europe's largest glacier and some of Iceland's most iconic hikes. Or take the road less traveled into the Westfjords, where steep mountain roads lead to remote beaches and peaceful solitude.

Glacier Lagoon Iceland

Having the ability to stop spontaneously is part of what makes campervan travel so magical. Whether you're capturing photos of basalt columns, admiring the dance of the aurora borealis, or simply taking in the untouched beauty of Iceland's wilderness, your camper gives you the freedom to truly experience the land of fire and ice.

Icelandic Highlands and Beyond

If you’re heading into the highlands, consult our team for advice on the right campervan rental and routes. While F roads are only for 4x4 vehicles and are off-limits to regular vans, our staff will guide you to the best accessible spots.

The highlands are a remote and wild region, covering a vast interior of the country filled with lunar-like landscapes, colorful rhyolite mountains, steaming geothermal valleys, and glacial rivers. They are only accessible for a few months each year, typically from mid-June to early September, and demand careful planning. Although traditional 4x4 vehicles are required for certain routes, we can help you select alternative paths that are accessible without violating road restrictions.

We emphasize safety first. Many of the F roads leading into the highlands are gravel-based and feature steep inclines, unbridged river crossings, and limited signage. Attempting to drive an unsuitable camper van on these roads not only risks damage but can also invalidate your insurance coverage. That's why it's essential to speak with our team before venturing into this breathtaking but challenging environment.

Icelandic scenery

Landmannalaugar and Kerlingarfjöll offer some of the region's most iconic views, with geothermal hot springs, hiking trails, and vibrant landscapes.

When traveling in or near the highlands, make sure your camper is stocked with all the essentials. This includes extra food and water, a full tank of fuel, warm layers, and emergency supplies. We also recommend downloading offline maps, as mobile reception can be spotty in remote areas.

Icelandic mountains

For adventurers eager to explore Iceland beyond the main highway, our experienced staff can recommend routes and campsites that give you a true taste of the highlands—without straying into risky territory. With our help, you can safely enjoy the magic of the Icelandic wilderness while still respecting road regulations and protecting your rental investment.

Let us be your guide to responsibly and comfortably exploring the wild heart of Iceland.

FAQ

What are the benefits of renting a camper van in Iceland?

Renting a camper van in Iceland gives you unmatched freedom to explore at your own pace. You can visit remote areas, stay closer to nature, and avoid the hassle of changing accommodations every night. A camper van combines transportation and lodging, which can be more cost-effective and convenient compared to booking hotels and rental cars separately.

Do I need a special license to drive a camper van in Iceland?

No special license is required if you hold a valid driver’s license from your home country. However, if your license is not in Latin script (for example, in Chinese or Arabic), you will need to present an international driver’s license along with your local one. Be sure to check the rental company’s specific requirements.

Can I drive on all roads with a standard camper van?

While most main roads and the Ring Road are suitable for standard camper vans, many F roads that lead into the highlands are not accessible unless you have a certified 4x4 vehicle. It is essential to understand which roads are off-limits to your vehicle type and follow local regulations. Driving on restricted roads without proper authorization can result in fines or void your insurance coverage.

Are campsites available year-round?

Many campsites in Iceland operate from late spring to early fall, typically from May through September. However, many campsites remain open year-round, particularly those near popular destinations like Reykjavik and the Golden Circle. It’s advisable to research campsites in advance, especially if you’re traveling in the off-season.

What is included in a camper van rental?

Our campervans include essential amenities such as unlimited mileage, a bed, a heating system, cooking equipment, and storage space. We also offer extras like Wi-Fi routers, child seats, camping tables and camping chairs.

Is it safe to camp in Iceland?

Yes, camping in Iceland is generally very safe. Crime rates are low, and campsites are well-maintained. However, it is important to prepare for changing weather conditions and follow all safety guidelines, particularly when driving in rural or highland areas.

Can I see the northern lights while traveling in a camper?

Absolutely! Renting a camper van gives you the flexibility to chase clear skies and prime viewing spots for the northern lights. The best time to witness the aurora borealis is from September to April. Avoid light-polluted areas and monitor aurora forecasts to improve your chances.

How do I stay warm during cold nights?

Our camper vans are equipped with a built-in heating system designed for overnight use. We also offer extra duvets and sleeping bags.

What kind of insurance should I get?

Basic CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is already included in the rental price. However, we highly recommend upgrading to zero risk to ensure a peace of mind.

Can I pick up my camper at the airport?

Yes, we offer pick-up and drop-off services at Keflavik International Airport. This makes it easy to start your adventure right after you land.

What should I bring for a campervan road trip in Iceland?

In addition to your clothing and travel documents, bring a reusable water bottle, snacks, power banks, a flashlight, layered clothing, waterproof gear, and hiking boots. Also consider downloading offline maps and travel apps to help navigate areas with limited cell service.

Are there toilets and showers in camper vans?

Our camper vans do not include built-in bathrooms, but Iceland has an excellent network of campsites that provide toilets, showers, and other amenities. Be sure to plan your route with regular stops at campsites for comfort and hygiene.

What Our Customers Say

Rui Preto

We rented the Renault Trafic 3 from Iceland Campers to drive the Ring Road in winter, and the experience truly exceeded our expectations. The van proved to be an excellent choice for anyone looking for comfort, safety, and practicality while travelling in Iceland. One of the biggest highlights was definitely the heating system, which worked flawlessly throughout the entire trip. Even with freezing temperatures and long nights, the interior stayed warm and comfortable, which made a huge difference. The interior space of the van is another strong point. Well-organized and functional, it allowed us to store everything we needed in an accessible way while still keeping a cosy environment for sleeping and cooking. For two travellers, the Trafic 3 offers the perfect balance between external size and usable interior space. In terms of driving, the Renault Trafic 3 proved to be reliable and safe even in snow and ice. We completed the entire Ring Road without any issues — the van handled well, with good traction and stability, giving us confidence even on the most demanding roads. Another extremely positive aspect was the professionalism of the Iceland Campers staff. Always helpful, attentive, and ready to assist, from the pick-up moment to the end of the trip. They made the whole process simple and stress-free. Overall, the experience was extremely positive. We highly recommend the Renault Trafic 3 and Iceland Campers to anyone planning to drive the Ring Road, especially in winter. Reliable, comfortable, and supported by an outstanding team.

To start off, I contacted Iceland Campers about four months in advance by phone, and was immediately met by Eythor (the owner) on the other end. From that first call and all the way until the very last day of our trip, he was always available to answer our countless questions about everything related to a Ring Road journey in Iceland. I just want to give a huge personal thank you for your incredible work ethic and helpfulness. You are extremely service-minded, and it truly shows—it was both noticed and deeply appreciated. You really put our minds at ease throughout the entire trip! A few days before our departure, we realized that we had accidentally booked our van one day too early—both for the pick-up and the return. Luckily, this turned out not to be an issue at all. The van was still available for two more days after our departure, and Iceland Campers kindly let us adjust the booking by one day without any fees or problems. That was a big relief and speaks volumes about their flexibility. The trip itself was absolutely amazing. We truly got the full Iceland experience—everything from wild winds and heavy rain to stunning rainbows over waterfalls on sunny days. We saw it all: waterfalls, puffins, lava fields, mountains, and so much more! For our family of five (basically five adults), having a rental van was essential. We chose the Grand Camper, and it was perfect for us. Of course, traveling with soaked clothes after the rain wasn’t always ideal, but we managed just fine. The space inside was more than enough, and overall it worked out really well for everyone. Towards the end of our trip, we unfortunately had a flat tire in Vik. But, just as with everything else, the service was excellent. We were quickly guided on how to find the spare tire and the right tools to fix it. We were even offered help in the morning, but since we wanted to get going early, we managed to fix it ourselves without any problems. The prices are also very competitive, especially considering that Iceland Campers is still a smaller, family-owned company. That’s a huge plus in my book—without compromising on quality in any way. All in all, I can’t think of a single thing to complain about. This was truly a 5-star experience! Over the past few years, we’ve traveled quite a lot around Europe, and I’ve noticed that family-owned businesses are almost always the best option. If you’re deciding between Iceland Campers, a bigger rental company, or any other alternative—look no further. Even though I haven’t tried other companies in Iceland, I can confidently say that you can’t go wrong with Iceland Campers. Much love from Sweden and from my entire family—thank you once again for helping turn this trip into lifelong memories!

Juano Echverry

We had the best experience with this company. Communication was excellent, and the owners were incredibly helpful. Our trip was fantastic thanks to the comfort of the camper, which was fully equipped with kitchenware, a refrigerator, chairs, and tables that made our experience even more enjoyable. The staff's energy was outstanding from beginning to end, which is why we always recommend them. We would rent from them again a thousand times.

Alex Duke

We simply notified them once we’d collected our luggage, and our driver arrived promptly—no waiting around in the cold with tired kids. He was incredibly helpful, loading all our luggage and assisting with our three little ones, making the transition smooth and welcoming. Upon arrival at their location, we were greeted by Eythor, the Director of Operations, who delivered one of the most thorough briefings I’ve ever experienced. He walked us through everything: operating the van, navigating Iceland’s unique roads (including those tricky roundabouts), parking fees, tolls, road conditions, and even recommended websites and resources for real-time updates. Eythor was patient beyond words, taking the time to answer every single question we had, which instantly built our confidence and trust in the company. Traveling from the USA, we weren’t familiar with Iceland’s driving and camping norms, but his guidance made us feel fully prepared. Since we were traveling with kids, we’d added a bunch of extras to our rental—car seats, chairs, a table, stove, gas, and more—and Eythor meticulously checked off every item to ensure nothing was missing. No surprises or shortages here! Right after the briefing, he led us to our van, which was spotless, perfectly cleaned, and fully equipped with everything we’d ordered. We hit the road without a single delay, unlike the horror stories we’d heard about dirty vans or last-minute holdups from other providers. Eythor didn’t stop there; he provided us with all the contact info and phone numbers we’d need for any issues during our trip—roadside assistance, emergencies, you name it. Thankfully, we never had to use them because our 9-day adventure went flawlessly. The van performed beautifully as we explored Iceland’s stunning landscapes, and the initial briefing was key to navigating the societal differences in driving and camping compared to back home in the USA. Iceland Campers’ attention to detail gave us the confidence to focus on making memories, not worrying about logistics. This company is an absolute must if you want a partner who truly sets you up for success. At the end of our trip, dropping off the van was just as seamless. We met Eythor and Charlie, who handled everything efficiently. Since we’d booked a hotel for our last night in Iceland (after spending most of the trip far from Keflavík), Charlie kindly provided transportation back to our hotel. But he went above and beyond—knowing we had one evening left, he shared fantastic recommendations for nearby restaurants and viewpoints, even driving me around to point them out and giving detailed overviews of the best foods and spots to enjoy with the family. It was such a thoughtful touch that capped off our vacation perfectly. Later that day, we received a confirmatory email from Iceland Campers ensuring all parks, tolls, and fees were squared away—no loose ends or surprises. This level of professionalism and follow-through is rare and truly sets them apart. In summary, Iceland Campers turned what could have been a daunting trip into an unforgettable, hassle-free adventure. Their team—especially Eythor and Charlie—treated us like family, and we’re already planning our next visit with them. Five stars—book with confidence!

Will book with Iceland Campers if we were visiting this beautiful country again in the future. Iceland is To go with them was such a good choice. The van was a very good car to drive. The van‘s front window broke because of a small stone from the road but we had the zero risk insurance so we didn‘t have to worry about it at all. We recommend this camper van rental without hesitation. Thank you Iceland Campers!
