Should I Rent a Motorhome in Iceland?

Iceland, known as the Land of Fire and Ice, offers some of the most dramatic landscapes in the world. From cascading waterfalls and black sand beaches to glaciers and volcanic craters, it’s a destination designed for exploration. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland, one question you may be asking is: Should I rent a motorhome? This article will help you decide whether a motorhome is the right choice for your Icelandic adventure.

The Benefits of Renting a Motorhome in Iceland

Renting a motorhome is one of the most popular ways to explore Iceland, and for good reason. Here are some of the key benefits:

  1. Freedom to Explore
With a motorhome, you’re not tied to a single location or a strict itinerary. You can adjust your plans based on weather conditions or personal preferences. Want to spend an extra day near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon or discover a less-traveled road? With a motorhome, it’s entirely up to you.
  2. Convenience
A motorhome combines transportation and accommodation into one. This eliminates the need to book hotels or transport between destinations. Plus, you’ll have everything you need with you—whether it’s your luggage, cooking equipment, or bedding.
  3. Cost-Effective Travel
While the upfront cost of renting a motorhome may seem high, it can save you money in the long run. With a motorhome, you won’t need to book expensive hotels or eat out for every meal. You can cook your own food and stay at affordable campsites, keeping your overall costs down.
  4. Immersion in Nature
Iceland’s beauty lies in its natural landscapes. A motorhome allows you to stay closer to nature, waking up to views of mountains, fjords, or even the northern lights during winter. It’s a unique experience that hotels simply can’t replicate.
  5. Adaptability to Iceland’s Unique Weather
Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable. A motorhome provides shelter from sudden rain or wind and allows you to travel at your own pace, avoiding treacherous conditions when needed.

Tips for Driving a Camper Van in Iceland

Driving a camper van in Iceland comes with a few challenges, especially for those unfamiliar with rural terrain. Road conditions vary greatly, from smooth highways to bumpy gravel roads and mountain F roads that are only open during summer months. Most camper vans are not allowed on F roads unless specifically stated in your rental agreement. Always check road conditions on vedur.is and road.is before setting off.

Navigating the South Coast and East Fjords

The south coast of Iceland is a favorite route for many travelers renting a camper van. This stretch includes iconic sights like Skógafoss, Reynisfjara’s black sand beaches, and Vatnajökull glacier views. As you loop around to the east fjords, expect quieter campsites and dramatic coastal roads. Renting a campervan gives you the freedom to pause wherever you feel inspired.

What to Expect from Campsites

Designated campsites in Iceland are equipped with a range of amenities, from simple grassy fields with access to cold water, to more developed sites with hot showers, wi-fi, and cooking facilities. Staying overnight at these campsites is mandatory for motorhome users. Some offer views of the northern lights, while others are near natural hot springs—ideal for relaxing after a long road trip.

Exploring Iceland in Winter by Camper Van

Winter adds a magical quality to Iceland’s landscapes, but it also comes with challenges. Snow and bad weather can affect your route and limit the number of open campsites. Most camper vans used in winter are fully equipped with heating systems and winter tires. You’ll want to stick to paved routes, often near the capital city and the golden circle, for safer travels.

Packing Essentials for Your Camper Van Trip

Your camper van will likely come fully equipped with beds, bedding, a small fridge, and basic cooking facilities. However, you should still bring extra warm layers, a rechargeable headlamp, portable power banks, and food supplies. While there are plenty of gas stations throughout the country, some areas—especially the west fjords and highland routes—may have fewer amenities. Pack smart for your journey.

Unlimited Mileage and Route Planning

Most motorhome rental companies offer unlimited mileage, which is a big plus if you plan to circle the entire island. This allows you to explore remote areas such as the west fjords or spend more time in beautiful spots like the south coast without worrying about distance. Make sure to plan your route around weather conditions and campground availability.

Comparing Camper Van Sizes and Features

Not all camper vans are created equal. Couples can often save money with a compact van, while families may need a larger vehicle with a dining area and bathroom. Look for features like a hot shower, wi-fi, and ample storage. Some rental companies even provide eco-friendly models to reduce environmental impact while exploring Iceland.

Best Time for a Road Trip in Iceland

The peak tourist season runs from June to August, offering the best weather and nearly 24 hours of daylight. However, spring and fall (May and September) offer fewer crowds and more availability. Winter, while more challenging, is great for those hoping to see the northern lights and experience Iceland at its most peaceful.

Helpful Apps for Your Camper Van Adventure

While visiting Iceland, apps like Veður (weather), 112 Iceland (emergency), and Parka (for campsite info and booking) can greatly improve your trip. These tools help you find campsites, avoid bad weather, and navigate remote areas safely and efficiently.

Why Travelers Absolutely Loved Renting a Camper Van

Many travelers who chose to rent a camper van in Iceland say it was the highlight of their trip. They absolutely loved the freedom to explore at their own pace, the ability to cook their own meals, and the connection to nature it offered. Reviews often highlight how it allowed them to cover more ground, save money, and discover hidden gems.

Things to Consider Before Renting a Motorhome

While a motorhome offers many advantages, there are also some factors to consider:

  1. Driving in Iceland
Driving in Iceland can be challenging, especially for those unfamiliar with rural or off-road conditions.
  2. Weather Conditions
Iceland’s weather can be harsh, particularly during the winter months. Snow, ice, and strong winds can make driving difficult. For winter trips, ensure your motorhome is equipped with winter tires and other necessary safety features.
  3. Campsite Regulations
Wild camping in Iceland is prohibited. You must park your motorhome overnight at a designated campsite. Fortunately, Iceland has a wide network of campsites, ranging from basic to full-service options. Be prepared to plan your stops in advance, especially during the peak summer season.
  4. Size and Accessibility
Motorhomes are larger than standard vehicles, which can make maneuvering in tight spaces, such as small parking lots or narrow roads, more challenging. If you plan to explore remote or less accessible areas, consider whether a smaller vehicle might be more practical.

Who Should Rent a Motorhome in Iceland?

A motorhome is an excellent choice for travelers who:

  • Value Flexibility: If you want the freedom to explore Iceland on your own terms, a motorhome offers unmatched versatility.
  • Plan to Travel as a Group or Family: Motorhomes can accommodate multiple passengers, making them a cost-effective choice for families or groups of friends.
  • Love the Outdoors: For those who enjoy camping and being close to nature, a motorhome provides a comfortable alternative to traditional tents.

Frequently Asked Questions About Motorhome Travel in Iceland

Should I rent a motorhome in Iceland?

Absolutely—renting a motorhome in Iceland is one of the most rewarding ways to explore the country. It offers unmatched freedom and flexibility, allowing you to travel at your own pace, avoid strict hotel check-ins, and wake up surrounded by breathtaking landscapes. Whether you’re chasing the northern lights, relaxing in natural hot springs, or driving along the south coast, a camper van lets you fully immerse yourself in Iceland’s natural wonders. It’s ideal for couples, families, and adventurers looking to combine accommodation and transportation in one fully equipped vehicle.

Can you park your motorhome anywhere in Iceland?

No, you cannot park your motorhome just anywhere in Iceland. Since 2015, wild camping in camper vans and motorhomes has been prohibited unless you have explicit permission from the landowner. Instead, travelers must stay overnight at designated campsites, which are found throughout the country. These sites often offer essential services such as hot showers, cooking facilities, waste disposal, and even wi-fi. Staying at designated campsites not only ensures compliance with Icelandic law but also helps preserve the island’s fragile ecosystems. Always plan your overnight stays ahead and use apps like Park4Night to find campsites conveniently.

How much does it cost to rent a motorhome in Iceland?

Shoulder months like May and September often see reduced rates, around €150 to €250 per day. In the off-season (October to April), prices can drop to €100–€200 per day. How many days do you need to campervan around Iceland?

To complete a full road trip around Iceland’s famous Ring Road (Route 1), most travelers spend about 7 to 10 days. This allows enough time to explore major highlights such as the south coast, east fjords, and west fjords, as well as the golden circle and black sand beaches. If you're driving your own campervan or renting a fully equipped vehicle, you’ll have the flexibility to explore at your own pace and adjust your itinerary for weather or spontaneous detours. For shorter visits, a 4–5 day itinerary focusing on a specific region is also possible.

Do you need a special license to drive an RV in Iceland?

For most travelers, the answer is no. You do not need a special license to drive a standard camper van in Iceland as long as the vehicle weighs under 3,500 kg and carries no more than 8 passengers. A valid category B driver’s license (the standard in most countries) is sufficient. However, you must have held your license for at least one year. If you plan to rent a larger motorhome or specialized vehicle, always confirm with the motorhome rental provider whether additional requirements apply.

What Our Customers Say

Rui Preto

We rented the Renault Trafic 3 from Iceland Campers to drive the Ring Road in winter, and the experience truly exceeded our expectations. The van proved to be an excellent choice for anyone looking for comfort, safety, and practicality while travelling in Iceland. One of the biggest highlights was definitely the heating system, which worked flawlessly throughout the entire trip. Even with freezing temperatures and long nights, the interior stayed warm and comfortable, which made a huge difference. The interior space of the van is another strong point. Well-organized and functional, it allowed us to store everything we needed in an accessible way while still keeping a cosy environment for sleeping and cooking. For two travellers, the Trafic 3 offers the perfect balance between external size and usable interior space. In terms of driving, the Renault Trafic 3 proved to be reliable and safe even in snow and ice. We completed the entire Ring Road without any issues — the van handled well, with good traction and stability, giving us confidence even on the most demanding roads. Another extremely positive aspect was the professionalism of the Iceland Campers staff. Always helpful, attentive, and ready to assist, from the pick-up moment to the end of the trip. They made the whole process simple and stress-free. Overall, the experience was extremely positive. We highly recommend the Renault Trafic 3 and Iceland Campers to anyone planning to drive the Ring Road, especially in winter. Reliable, comfortable, and supported by an outstanding team.

To start off, I contacted Iceland Campers about four months in advance by phone, and was immediately met by Eythor (the owner) on the other end. From that first call and all the way until the very last day of our trip, he was always available to answer our countless questions about everything related to a Ring Road journey in Iceland. I just want to give a huge personal thank you for your incredible work ethic and helpfulness. You are extremely service-minded, and it truly shows—it was both noticed and deeply appreciated. You really put our minds at ease throughout the entire trip! A few days before our departure, we realized that we had accidentally booked our van one day too early—both for the pick-up and the return. Luckily, this turned out not to be an issue at all. The van was still available for two more days after our departure, and Iceland Campers kindly let us adjust the booking by one day without any fees or problems. That was a big relief and speaks volumes about their flexibility. The trip itself was absolutely amazing. We truly got the full Iceland experience—everything from wild winds and heavy rain to stunning rainbows over waterfalls on sunny days. We saw it all: waterfalls, puffins, lava fields, mountains, and so much more! For our family of five (basically five adults), having a rental van was essential. We chose the Grand Camper, and it was perfect for us. Of course, traveling with soaked clothes after the rain wasn’t always ideal, but we managed just fine. The space inside was more than enough, and overall it worked out really well for everyone. Towards the end of our trip, we unfortunately had a flat tire in Vik. But, just as with everything else, the service was excellent. We were quickly guided on how to find the spare tire and the right tools to fix it. We were even offered help in the morning, but since we wanted to get going early, we managed to fix it ourselves without any problems. The prices are also very competitive, especially considering that Iceland Campers is still a smaller, family-owned company. That’s a huge plus in my book—without compromising on quality in any way. All in all, I can’t think of a single thing to complain about. This was truly a 5-star experience! Over the past few years, we’ve traveled quite a lot around Europe, and I’ve noticed that family-owned businesses are almost always the best option. If you’re deciding between Iceland Campers, a bigger rental company, or any other alternative—look no further. Even though I haven’t tried other companies in Iceland, I can confidently say that you can’t go wrong with Iceland Campers. Much love from Sweden and from my entire family—thank you once again for helping turn this trip into lifelong memories!

Juano Echverry

We had the best experience with this company. Communication was excellent, and the owners were incredibly helpful. Our trip was fantastic thanks to the comfort of the camper, which was fully equipped with kitchenware, a refrigerator, chairs, and tables that made our experience even more enjoyable. The staff's energy was outstanding from beginning to end, which is why we always recommend them. We would rent from them again a thousand times.

Alex Duke

We simply notified them once we’d collected our luggage, and our driver arrived promptly—no waiting around in the cold with tired kids. He was incredibly helpful, loading all our luggage and assisting with our three little ones, making the transition smooth and welcoming. Upon arrival at their location, we were greeted by Eythor, the Director of Operations, who delivered one of the most thorough briefings I’ve ever experienced. He walked us through everything: operating the van, navigating Iceland’s unique roads (including those tricky roundabouts), parking fees, tolls, road conditions, and even recommended websites and resources for real-time updates. Eythor was patient beyond words, taking the time to answer every single question we had, which instantly built our confidence and trust in the company. Traveling from the USA, we weren’t familiar with Iceland’s driving and camping norms, but his guidance made us feel fully prepared. Since we were traveling with kids, we’d added a bunch of extras to our rental—car seats, chairs, a table, stove, gas, and more—and Eythor meticulously checked off every item to ensure nothing was missing. No surprises or shortages here! Right after the briefing, he led us to our van, which was spotless, perfectly cleaned, and fully equipped with everything we’d ordered. We hit the road without a single delay, unlike the horror stories we’d heard about dirty vans or last-minute holdups from other providers. Eythor didn’t stop there; he provided us with all the contact info and phone numbers we’d need for any issues during our trip—roadside assistance, emergencies, you name it. Thankfully, we never had to use them because our 9-day adventure went flawlessly. The van performed beautifully as we explored Iceland’s stunning landscapes, and the initial briefing was key to navigating the societal differences in driving and camping compared to back home in the USA. Iceland Campers’ attention to detail gave us the confidence to focus on making memories, not worrying about logistics. This company is an absolute must if you want a partner who truly sets you up for success. At the end of our trip, dropping off the van was just as seamless. We met Eythor and Charlie, who handled everything efficiently. Since we’d booked a hotel for our last night in Iceland (after spending most of the trip far from Keflavík), Charlie kindly provided transportation back to our hotel. But he went above and beyond—knowing we had one evening left, he shared fantastic recommendations for nearby restaurants and viewpoints, even driving me around to point them out and giving detailed overviews of the best foods and spots to enjoy with the family. It was such a thoughtful touch that capped off our vacation perfectly. Later that day, we received a confirmatory email from Iceland Campers ensuring all parks, tolls, and fees were squared away—no loose ends or surprises. This level of professionalism and follow-through is rare and truly sets them apart. In summary, Iceland Campers turned what could have been a daunting trip into an unforgettable, hassle-free adventure. Their team—especially Eythor and Charlie—treated us like family, and we’re already planning our next visit with them. Five stars—book with confidence!

Will book with Iceland Campers if we were visiting this beautiful country again in the future. Iceland is To go with them was such a good choice. The van was a very good car to drive. The van‘s front window broke because of a small stone from the road but we had the zero risk insurance so we didn‘t have to worry about it at all. We recommend this camper van rental without hesitation. Thank you Iceland Campers!
